Packman: What temperature of food can Kraft Lunch Boxes hold? | Singapore

Kraft lunch boxes are made from paperboard or corrugated cardboard, typically with a food-safe coating, and they are designed to hold a variety of foods. However, when it comes to temperature tolerance, they have certain limitations.

Temperature Tolerance of Kraft Lunch Boxes:

  1. Room Temperature (up to 70°F / 21°C):

    • Kraft lunch boxes are most effective for storing and packaging food at room temperature. This is where they maintain their structure and integrity without risk of bending or becoming soggy.

  2. Warm Food (up to 120°F / 49°C):

    • Kraft lunch boxes can hold warm food for short periods. They’re ideal for items like sandwiches, salads, or snacks that are served warm but not piping hot.

    • However, when exposed to higher temperatures for extended periods, the paper may start to weaken or lose its structure, especially if the food is greasy or moist.

  3. Hot Food (above 120°F / 49°C):

    • While some kraft lunch boxes are designed with a food-safe coating or wax lining that can offer limited heat resistance, they are generally not suitable for very hot or steaming food (above 120°F / 49°C).

    • Foods like soups, stews, or foods served directly from an oven might cause the box to lose integrity or even leak or degrade.

  4. Cold Food (Refrigeration):

    • Kraft lunch boxes can be used to store cold food items, such as salads, fruits, and desserts, without issue. In fact, they’re often used for chilled take-out meals.

    • For extended periods, it’s important to ensure that the boxes are kept in a temperature-controlled environment, as cold temperatures do not affect the structure of kraft boxes the way high heat does.

Kraft lunch boxes can hold food at room temperature or warm (up to about 120°F / 49°C) for a reasonable amount of time, but they are not designed to hold very hot food or withstand high temperatures for extended periods. They are a great option for packaging cold or moderately warm foods, but care should be taken when using them for very hot or greasy items to avoid degradation of the box.
